History
Sffgmss IFA wagons were constructed by Arbel Fauvet Rail in France in the 1980s and their main purpose was to transport freight in shipping containers. As ‘Ferryboat Wagons’, they were transported on European ferries and could also pass through the Channel Tunnel to the UK.
The bogie wagon’s platform length is 16.58m (approximately 54ft 5in) and the average tare is 18 tonnes. Each wagon can carry combinations of 20 and 30ft shipping containers, or a single 40 or 45ft unit.
These ubiquitous French wagons are now mostly seen in Germany and the UK. Due to its low frame, it is compatible to run on British routes, even with high cube containers as a load. The IFA wagons can often be seen in trains hauled by a Class 66 locomotive.
These Sffgmss wagons now belong to various owners, such as Touax, Ermewa, CNC, Novatrans and France Wagons.
